Mizoram is more than just a state in Northeast India. It’s a place where stereotypes are reversed. The roads are packed, the city is crowded, and yet there is not a single honk to be heard. The Mizo women are the real baddies, running the show as everything from business owners to chemists and textile producers. Mizoram isn’t just a destination; it’s a way of life.

These were the only impressions that filled me as we concluded our week-long trip to Mizoram in April 2026. It doesn’t happen as frequently when a destination and its people captivate you with their way of life. I haven’t observed such a strong sense of community and mutual respect anywhere else and that is a reason enough for everyone to at least visit Aizawl once in their life.
While planning our trip to Aizawl, we wanted to slow-travel and only visit a handful of places. Since we were travelling during the shoulder-season, a leisurely stay in Aizawl spent cafe hopping, walking around Bara Bazaar, sunrise at Reiek Tlang, and a quick getaway to Thenzawl felt perfect.
However, if you’re planning to visit Mizoram for the first time, this Aizawl itinerary will be the perfect starting point for a seamless journey.

3 Days in Aizawl
Welcome to Mizoram. Land at Lengpui Airport or arrive at Sairang Railway Station. An hour-long drive will lead you to the heart of Mizoram, Aizawl. Take the day to settle in and venture on your own to soak the vibe of the city. It is one of the most walkable cities that invites everyone to find their way through the narrow lanes and long staircases. One of the best ways to spend the first day in the city is to visit a cafe with a view, sip some hot chocolate or coffee while watching the sunset. A stroll through Bara Bazaar is also highly recommended.
Aizawl has a remarkable culture. It is the culture of closing the shutters at exactly 6 PM. While restaurants and cafes are open till 10 PM or later, most shops shut down in the evening.
Embark on a journey to explore the tourist attractions in Aizawl on the second day. The most suitable way to explore the city gems is to hire a full-day taxi that will take you everywhere from the famous Solomon Temple, KV Paradise to Aizawl Skywalk.
We travelled in and around Aizawl with Joshua (+91 92335 57585) and we highly recommend based on our seamless experience.
Aizawl Skywalk is one of the most famous points and for all the right reasons. It is a beautiful restaurant turned attraction perched on a hill on the opposite side of the city that affords excellent panoramic views.
Reserve the last full-day in Aizawl to catch a breathtaking sunrise from Reiek Tlang. Unlike other viewpoints, Reiek is easily accessible for everyone. A 2-hour drive in the early morning hours from the city takes you to the parking lot from where you can hail another quick taxi ride to the top. The sunrise is magical, to say the least.
The drive back from Reiek also offers a unique opportunity to explore Reiek Heritage Village and take a quick pitstop at Tuithum Lui Falls – II near Tlawng River surrounding Aizawl.

If you have some more time on your hands, Tam Dil Lake makes for an excellent addition to the regular Aizawl itinerary. Nestled by hills on all sides, this lake affords a unique and serene opportunity to unwind in the lap of nature.

2 Days in Thenzawl
Thenzawl offers the most rewarding and quick getaway from Aizawl that is almost mandatory on everyone’s Aizawl itinerary. This trip will take you around Tropic of Cancer and Hmuifang Tlang before leading you down to the village of Thenzawl.

An approximately five hour journey with a few pitstops finally concludes for the day in Thenzawl where the mighty Vantawng Falls await everyone. While it is a bit of a hike to reach the base of the cascading falls, the Vantawng Waterfall Viewpoint affords a beautiful sight. The falls come alive in all their glory after the monsoon from October to December.

When we visited Vantawng Falls, it was less of a waterfall and more of a stream of water trickling down. However, this afforded us a chance to go boating to the top of the falls starting at Tuihiriau boating point. We passed through the Tuirihiau Falls to the starting point, which we could only imagine would be a sight to behold with the water gushing after the monsoon season.
Thenzawl is also home to traditional bamboo textile workshops. The entire town is involved in producing Mizo textile and often an English-speaking local from the area volunteers to take visitors around to show the process and the final produce. It offers a great way to promote the local textile and culture and also quick break for some retail therapy.

A getaway to Thenzawl is incomplete without including a stopover at Dil Pui Lake. It is one of the serene lakes in Mizoram that invites visitors to slow down, take a stroll and absorb the natural beauty all around. You can also take a dip in the lake but individual discretion is advised.

Trip to Champhai
Tucked close to the Indo-Myanmar border, Champhai is also known as the “rice bowl of Mizoram”. It is one of the most promising destinations to add in your Aizawl itinerary that offers natural beauty, cultural festivals and a chance to sneak a peek in Myanmar.
The best time to visit Champhai is during the Cosmos Festival when the colourful cosmos flowers bloom and paint the valley in pops of pink and purple.
If you decide to visit during the Cosmos Festival, a trip to Champhai for 2-3 days will be perfect to experience all the unique things in the region.
While we didn’t get a chance to go to Champhai this trip, make sure to include one of the largest lakes Mizoram, Rih Dil, and Vangchhia to observe the ancient, megalithic menhirs (standing stones) jutting out of the earth.
Find out everything that you can do in Champhai here.
