Having explored more than 30+ countries including a few alpine lakes, we have rarely come across a lake side town that has flawlessly balanced different cultural identities. It is where impeccable Swiss efficiency flirts with Italian dolce vita.
Lugano feels like Switzerland’s version of Lake Como, only significantly more serene, far less crowded, and arguably much more beautiful, all while maintaining a perfect, effortless Italian flair.
It is the antidote to over-tourism with unmatched aesthetics.
Getting In & Around Lugano
The city is well-connected with trains and buses and here is the suggested route to follow:
- By Train: Trenitalia’s EuroCity efficiently and directly connects Milan Centrale to Lugano FLP. The journey only takes about 80 minutes to cover the distance. Find your connection here.
- By Bus: A cheaper and equally efficient alternative is the bus journey from Milan to Lugano. Since we were travelling from Turino, Italy, we preferred a Flixbus connection to Lugano FLP over multiple train connections.
Where to stay in Lugano
The city is dotted with hotel and airbnb stay options and the best area to situate yourself is close to the central station or by the lakeside. Although we stayed at Novotel Lugano Paradiso and it was an incredible experience, here is a list of listings that you can check out.

The Best Things To Do in Lugano
When a country boasts unparalleled alpine beauty, infinite hiking trails, and endless mirror-like lakes, I firmly believe in starting your trip in a place that gently initiates you into the magic. Enter Lugano.
The best part about visiting Lugano at the start of your trip is the pacing. A two-night stay offers just enough ground to explore sweeping viewpoints and sun-drenched piazzas, leaving you completely mesmerised and eager for the exciting journey ahead.
And while there are breathtaking hikes, stunning trails, and cheeky detours, here are a few of things to do in Lugano that you cannot miss:
Dive in the Emerald Waters of Lavertezzo
This is the ultimate hidden gem of Ticino region. Tucked in the Verzasca Valley, this village is famous for its crystal-clear ice-cold river. The absolute centrepiece here is Ponte dei Salti, a 17th-century double arched stone bridge meant to frame the emerald water but commonly used as the cliff-jumping point by many Swiss boys.
Best Time to Visit Lavertezzo
The best time to head to Lavertezzo is right after breakfast or arrival. The bright sun makes the crystal-clear river shine brighter and more vibrant. Moreover, afternoon is also the best time to take a dip and lay flat on the sun drenched rocks to re-absorb all the warmth.
We arrived in Lugano in the morning and without losing any time, dropped our bags at the hotel and made our way to the village.
Getting to Lavertezzo
Take RE80 Locarno from Lugano Train Station to Tenero, and then take 321 bus to Lavertezzo, Paese. The journey takes about 90 minutes one-way.
Soak the vibe at Piazza della Riforma
This city is where Swiss precision meets the Italian dolce vita, and an evening stroll through its Old Town is an absolute must. Grab a gelato, or sip a glass of local Ticino Merlot, and watch the square come alive under the golden hour light.
Best time to visit: Perfect for an evening stroll after returning from Lavertezzo.
Unwind in Parco Ciani
Parco Ciani is arguably one of the most beautiful parks in Switzerland situated right by the shores of Lake Lugano. It is the perfect spot to unwind under the oak trees or escape the city’s hustle bustle. Make sure to not miss the iron-wrought “Gate to Nowhere,” and admire the beautifully framed lake and the mountains.
Best time to visit: The second morning in the city.
Experience the Swiss Romance at Morcote
Morcote is the second hidden gem in the region that you cannot miss. Situated by the shores of Lake Lugano, visiting Morocote will feel like tasting a slice of paradise. The Lakeside Promenade dotted with palm trees, colourful shops and cafes will remind you of the Mediterranean bliss without the crowds. One of the best things to do in Morcote is to climb all the way up to Chiesa Santa Maria del Sasso.

Getting There
Morcote is accessible both by Lake Lugano cruise and 431 bus. Although, we suggest to not miss the cruise. It’s a unique and charming experience that also allows you to get a good look at the other lakeside villages.
